Today there are many good shops, our allies. We know they work as hard as we do to get the job done right. Most mechanically minded people can turn a bolt or change parts. We like to believe our counter parts have good ability and technique, spinning a wrench with precision and knowing the exact part to replace. The technology used in our industry today is very fast moving; computers, diesel fuel, bio- fuels (that's a topic all on its own), delivery, EPA requirements, and exhaust re-generation is a daunting task for technicians and can be hard understand the root cause or system failure.

The problem today in vehicle repair or maintenance is not just technology it-self. The products in today's market are constantly changing. We need to understand more than ever that we are not just mechanics anymore. There is an increasing demand that we become a new breed of technologists. It's just like any other technological field, the moment you understand a system the industry changes. However we've adapted to this climate and found a way to combat many of the problems that seem brain numbing and leave us scrambling for answers.

The challenge is to think outside the box and discard our old "the world is flat" thinking. Let's look for solutions with a new perspective. Just as the military and aerospace industry incorporates systems that promote critical performance we in the automotive and trucking industry can too.

There are a very limited amount of specialists called Nanotechnologists and Tribologists. Nano-Tribology is a branch of tribology, which studies friction phenomenon at the scale of a nanometer. The distinction between Nano-Tribology and Tribology is primarily is the involvement of atomic forces in the determination of the final behavior of the system (lubrication and wear). The behavior of wear and contamination of gears, bearings, and liquid lubricants can reduce friction in the well they do in a macroscopic world, but the origins of friction for small devices such as micro- or nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS) require other solutions.

Despite the unprecedented accuracy by which these devices are nowadays designed and fabricated, they're enormous surface-volume ratio, which leads to severe friction and wear issues, which dramatically reduce their applicability and lifetime. Traditional liquid lubricants become too viscous when confined in layers of molecular thickness. This situation has led to a number of proposals for ways to reduce friction on the Nano scale, such as super lubricity and thermo lubricity.

It takes thinking outside the box, not rumors or passed down theory. Even old school thinking, it's just that… history….. over, done, kaput. So throwaway your notion of changing your oil at 3000 miles, or 15,000 in large sumps.

Did we say technology? YES, so why do you still think fluids today have a life of time or miles? Or better yet or more confusing why would you look at parts per million in your fluids? Let me just twist your mind a little more… Water cracking oil? That is changing the molecule structure and behavior of the oil. Or infusing metal particles as small as a molecule to rebuild the surface of the damaged or contamination surface causing damages on a gear or bearing or turbo shaft? Better yet, where did it come from, and why? I am sure I lost some of you at this point, well that is just part of what we do here at Kollmar and we understand the meaning of what happens to your equipment and why. You see anyone can spin a wrench, but today there is a need to know more. Most cases they look at new assets or other solutions like a fleet billing and management company to handle cost and repairs. Nice idea and it works in the short-term asset life cycle. This is an expensive solution to companies and or branches never getting it right. What if you could take that asset life cycle and extend it 2-3 times? Possibly 4 times even 5 times in some cases.
